The last day of 2014 is of great significance for Djibouti. This day marks the beginning of the track laying of its first electric railway, ushering a new era for Djibouti.
At 3:00 pm in the afternoon of December 31st, the track laying begins in a small town Galile, along the Ethiopia-Djibouti railway line constructed by CCECC.
To commemorate such historic moment, Ismael Omar Guelleh, President of Djibouti, attended this ceremony along with several ministers. Mr. Fu Huaqiang, Chinese ambassador to Djibouti and Mr. Li Wuliang, assistant president and manager of African Department of CCECC were also present at the ceremony.
President Guelleh extended his congratulations to the successful launching of this groundbreaking and his acknowledgement of CCECC’s achievement. He said today was a remarkable day for Djibouti. The completion of this railway would greatly enhance economic development and would be beneficial to Djibouti people.。
Ambassador Fu observed that this railway marked concerted effort among China, Ethiopia and Djibouti. It not only promotes economic exchanges between Ethiopia and Djibouti, but brings joy and happiness to local people as well.
Mr. Li said that laying the track at the end of 2014 was a New Year’s gift to the local people. It is also a milestone in a new era. CCECC is confident to finish laying the whole line by May and complete the railway in October.
A local resident told the reporter she was looking forward to this rail very much. “Many of my relatives are in Ethiopia. Taking the road is costly and unsafe for us. When the railway completes next year, it will be much more convenient.”
Kadir is a Djibouti engineer working along this railway. He said he was greatly impressed by CCECC’s efficiency and quality. He learned a lot from Chinese workers of their perseverance. When this railway completes, it will bring much benefit to both countries.
Kadir said, “CCECC’s construction is fast and good. When it finishes, import and export trading will be elevated, which will bring more foreign exchanges. It will bring tangible result to both people.”
